Performance Managers

Leadership Workshop (4 of 12) – Lead Through Others

Leading at Light Speed is a new leadership book by Eric Douglas detailing the 10 Quantum Leaps to build trust, spark innovation, and create a high-performing organization.

Quantum Leap #3 is all about how to Lead Through Others.

Leading through others means giving people the tools to succeed. They should receive sufficient opportunities to critique their strong skills and how they can develop on their weaker ones.. It also entails developing methods to inspire employees to own up to their necessity for professional development..

Good leaders give feedback all the time.
They don’t wait for the formal performance assessment. If people only get feedback once a year, they’re not getting the feedback at the time when they can best use it – at the point when it’s immediate and relevant to their work. Competent leaders understand the cycle of performance progression.. The cycle sets in motion at the beginning when a person finds work – and carries on as long as the employee stays with an organization.. The life cycle has these steps:

The cycle begins by clearly communicating the expectations and results you want to see. The cycle persists with effective communication and prompt feedback about the employee’s strengths, and what parts need improvement.. Depending on the quality of the employee’s performance and the nature of the assignment, it may be necessary to change the employee’s responsibilities and expectations.

On a regular basis, the leader should ask the employee to complete a self-appraisal and share it. The leader responds by validating the employee’s identification of his or her strengths and the areas that need improvement.. Based on that discussion, the employee should create an individual development plan (IDP), identifying his or her short-term development goals and long-term career goals.

The important thing to stress is that this is a positive experience. From the CEO on down, all leaders must possess an idp and persistently seek professional development.. A lesson to be learned from well-built companies is that the CEO allocate his or her IDP with all the managers.. As evident in others, team members collaborate their IDPs and assist each other in achieving growth objectives..

The point is that no one stops developing. It is a life-long pursuit, and those who are actively attuned and engaged in their professional development find deep satisfaction and fulfillment in it.

Tactical Uses of Telemarketing

Like any outsourcing decision, retaining outside telemarketing services should be subject to cost/benefit analysis. Evaluating the costs may be a complex process in some cases, but it is at least a quantifiable side of the equation. Less readily quantifiable are the benefits.

While ultimately the goal is that some benefits can be quantified in terms of sales results, it is useful to recognize that there may be additional, tactical benefits to be gained by outsourcing telemarketing. Only when these broader implications are understood can a full cost/ benefit analysis take place.

The goal of this white paper is to provide a framework for telemarketing outsourcing decisions. By detailing some of the broader, tactical benefits of retaining outside telemarketing services, this paper will both provide a template for fully-realized cost/benefit analysis, and suggest criteria for selection of a telemarketing company.

Comparing Costs and Benefits of Telemarketing Options

Comparing the cost side of in-house vs. outsourced telemarketing operations is relatively straightforward. In particular, where a company has a history of in-house telemarketing operations, there is an established budget which can be compared against outside telemarketing quotes. Even where there is no existing internal operation as a basis for comparison, a pro-forma budget can be formulated for comparison against telemarketing quotes.

It is on the benefits side of the cost/benefits analysis that things get a little trickier. First of all, sales results are notoriously hard to project whenever a change in personnel and methodology is involved. Second of all, while sales results are the main goal, there are also significant benefits to outsourcing telemarketing that are not so easily quantified. Indeed, although sales results are likely to be paramount in the ultimate evaluation of the success of the program, because of the uncertainty of sales projections at the start, the less tangible benefits of outsourcing should be viewed as key criteria for the initial decision.

This is why a full understanding of those benefits is so important to the cost/benefit decision. A review of ten tactical uses of telemarketing services can help shed light on those broader potential benefits.

Ten Tactical Uses of Telemarketing Services

The list below highlights ten tactical uses of telemarketing services. While any one company is not likely to be able to take advantage of all ten at one time, it is important to recognize all ten so that each management team can decide on the uses best suited to their needs and opportunities, and choose a telemarketing company accordingly.

1. Lower barriers to entry. For a start-up, assembling a telemarketing team would represent an extremely costly upfront investment in personnel and technology. Perhaps even worse, the time this would take could take away a key advantage small companies have, which is nimbleness in pursuing emerging opportunities. Being able to outsource telemarketing reduces this barrier to entry.

2. Scale up sales staff at peak times. Sales for many products and services are seasonal. Trying to expand and contract an in-house telemarketing staff to conform with those seasons is not practical- qualified temporary workers can be hard to find, and doing so would mean regularly consuming time building the team back up. With outsourced telemarketing services, sales resources can be ramped up and scaled back down at any time.

3. Leverage in-house sales staff by setting appointments. Sometimes, the argument may be that a given type of sales close is too complex to be handled by an outsourced telemarketing team. If a close requires a highly-specialized sales force, it may be all the more reason to leverage their time by using outside telemarketing to do preliminary prospect screens and set appointments.

4. Free management to focus on core competencies. Another way outside telemarketing can leverage in-house expertise is by freeing a portion of management time to focus on core competencies. Outsourcing the telemarketing department means one less group to oversee, and one less set of personnel issues to handle.

5. Limit fixed costs to improve ROI. Besides leveraging expertise, outsourcing telemarketing can provide financial leverage by converting a fixed cost into a variable cost. While personnel cost savings may be offset by fees for telemarketing services, the sunk costs of real estate and technology investment can be avoided by outsourcing.

6. Call attention to other marketing media. Mailers are more effective when accompanied by timely telephone follow-up, and telemarketing campaigns can also be used to drive traffic to special web site features. Since all marketing initiatives have a limited shelf life, being able to deploy concentrated resources to call timely attention to new initiatives is a clear advantage of outsourcing.

7. Test new tactics. Having access to an expandable sales resource in the form of an outside telemarketing company allows a firm to run parallel sales campaigns to test new tactics. Different value propositions and price points can be tried, with efforts then directed toward the approaches which are most successful.

8. Qualify prospects and develop a proprietary database. Any publicly-available contact list is likely to contain some errors and be based on dated information. In addition, it might not have the specific contact information or profile detail for a given product or service. By compiling updated information and additional detail in the course of their efforts, a professional telemarketing team can quickly turn a flawed database into a proprietary information source.

9. Gain access to state-of-the-art technology and expertise. Telemarketing companies are specialists in what they do. They have the fastest, most reliable, and most cost-efficient equipment, and their experience can be unleashed on new marketing challenge. This is a significant advantage over having to accumulate this equipment and experience from scratch.

10. Avoid telemarketing regulatory pitfalls. There has been a series of legislative restrictions on telemarketing activities, which can represent a potential legal liability to any organization with an in- house telemarketing operation. Outside telemarketing companies are in the business of keeping track of and complying with those regulations, and they keep the potential liability at arm’s length.

Conclusion

Outsourcing telemarketing services may not be an option for all organizations, especially in highly-regulated industries with strict licensing requirements, or for very complex, high-end sales. However, for the vast majority of sales-driven organizations, it is an option which should be explored with a full understanding of the potential benefits.

Cost/benefit decisions are usually discussed as trade-offs, where lower costs are exchanged for lesser benefits, or higher costs are invested in return for greater benefits. Approached correctly though, outsourcing telemarketing services can be a win/win proposition rather than a trade-off, as lower costs may be accompanied by improved productivity and a range of other benefits.*

Free Email Lists -Prevent Costly Mistakes

A mailing list in full use with decent auto-responders is a joy to see and literally poetry in motion. If your not sure what an auto-responder is, be sure to check out the link at the bottom of this article.

How would you like to sell a product to a customer and then market more of your products to that same customer in the future automatically without having to do anything (apart from setting up a process one time only?

Interested? Mailing lists are big business, and lots of businesses fail to see just how important capturing a customers email address can be.

Even if you do not have your own product i.e. if you are an affiliate marketer for other peoples products I am going to try to convince you of the importance of a mailing list you can use to market over and over to customers.

Logically, don’t you think it makes sense to sell to existing customers? You have bought this existing customer to your website in the past and hopefully because you gave outstanding service and the product they purchased exceeded their expectations, they will be much more receptive to you for any new products you offer in the future.

Having the customer (or even potential customers) on a mailing list makes sense doesn’t it? It’s a great way to keep in touch and to keep your name in their Inbox (hopefully for good reasons!) and is a great way to convert potential buyers into customers and existing customers in repeat-business customers.

It starts with the mailing list. It’s very important to capture the visitors name and email address when they get to your website, so that you have an opportunity to build a relationship with them in the future.

So how do you go about that? After all many people are reluctant to give out an email address to just anyone, because we all loathe spam, and you have to have built up a rapport before people are at ease giving you their email address. It really is a catch-22?

Well two things will help here, firstly the quality of the information on your website will be a real plus. Relevant quality content will show the visitor that this is not a dodgy website, but rather a real website run by a real person.

Having a privacy policy and real contact information including phone numbers is also very important and helps in showing your customer that you are a real living person.

With all that said, many potential customers would still be reluctant to give you their email address, so you have to give out an incentive, a reason for them to give you their email address.

When considering finding out more about email mailing lists; it pays to do a little research first as a good way to move forward faster!

This is where a useful report, a useful e-Book, or other information can come in handy. Tell the visitor if they sign up to your mailing list, they get access to the report, or whatever it is that you are offering free of charge. If you haven’t got anything else to give away, think laterally.

What about offering a coupon to be used to claim a discount when ordering, or some other benefit.

People get the chance to find out more about you, your products and services with auto-responders. Often it may take five or more pieces of “content” before someone feels comfortable enough to purchase something from you.

I have purchased a lot (and when I say a lot the emphasis is on the words a lot) of e-Books in my time, and the quality of a fair portion of them was sub-average at best.

In many cases I would not have purchased the e-Book if I had read some of it first, but on the other hand there are some purchases I have not made because I wasn’t sure what to expect quality wise, and being able to read a few chapters might just have persuaded me to buy the book).

The thing you need to remember about giveaways is to make sure it’s a quality product and relevant to your website. If your freebie turns out to be useless to your subscriber and not of value, they are going to unsubscribe faster than you can say “oops I blew it”.

Speaking of un-subscribing, it’s also very important for the visitor to know they can un-subscribe anytime without penalty, so make sure you make this clear on the sign up/opt-in page, and then ensure you actually do unsubscribe them if you receive a request to do so.

Auto-responders truly are the bee’s knee’s (Aussie slang for perfect).

The following are things that you should assume any high quality email service provider is providing. You can scratch off any ESP that doesn’t provide:

Hundreds of templates Resources and guide materials Tracking and statistics List management services

Next, you want to eliminate a further wave of companies by looking at some of the add-on services you may be interested in. Some of these add-on features include:

Autoresponders Surveys

Finally, you want to take a look at a few distinguishing characteristics that make the best cheap email marketing companies stand out from the others. Take a look at:

Deliverability rates Customer satisfaction Industry specific needs Prices

If you try to find your email service provider following this three pronged elimination strategy, you should end up with the best cheap email marketing company that perfectly matches your needs.

If you’re already running an email campaign you can certainly find ways to trim your current costs. If you’re being billed by total list size you should focus on really getting the most from each and every person on that list. Cheap email marketing is about quality, not quantity. You can help narrow your list down into a more focused selection by using customer satisfaction surveys and by taking a close look at your bounce statistics and activity trails.

If you’re billed according to the total number of messages you send, you can also lower your costs by decreasing your total list size. Additionally, you can start focusing on creating more effective messages. Every ineffective or imperfect email message you send out just tacks on more costs. Here are a few ways you can make more out of each of your messages:

Short, compelling subject lines A point to every message Engaging, useful content Clear calls to action in multiple locations

If you pay attention to these steps you’ll be able to find the best cheap email marketing option available to you and you’ll also be able to lower your current costs.
